3-8 Years | CPRT
Sheila Wessels is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S), Registered Play Therapist Supervisor™ (RPT-S™) and a Certified Child-Centered Play Therapist. Sheila received her Master’s degree in Professional Counseling and Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Texas State University, a CACREP Accredited Program.
Sheila's extensive career spans over 15 years in public education, including 12 years as a Professional School Counselor and 3 years as an Elementary School Teacher. Her roles have included Gifted and Talented Campus Coordinator, Social and Emotional Facilitator, and Campus Testing Coordinator. As a lead elementary counselor for the Austin Independent School District, Sheila mentored new counselors and provided professional development and crisis support.
Among her professional achievements, Sheila received the CREST (Counselors Reinforcing Excellence in Texas) Award from the Texas Counseling Association. She has furthered her expertise through specialized training in TBRI Trauma-Informed Classrooms at the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development and participated in the Neurosequential Model in Education Boot Camp led by Fellows from the Child Trauma Academy.
Sheila’s therapeutic approach is grounded in Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), a developmentally attuned, play-based intervention designed for young children aged 3 to 10 who face social, emotional, behavioral, or relational challenges. CCPT emphasizes the centrality of the child’s experience within the therapeutic relationship, using play—the natural language of children—along with creative expression and empathetic listening to foster self-awareness, confidence, and problem-solving skills. By providing a secure and consistent environment where children receive unconditional acceptance, empathy, and understanding, Sheila helps them explore and express their inner emotions and experiences. The primary goal of CCPT is to unlock each child’s inherent potential, guiding them toward self-integration and positive development, with typical outcomes including reduced symptomatic behaviors and improved overall functioning.
Originally from Austin, Sheila loves spending time with her husband, two daughters, and their dogs, Charlie Biscuit and Mozzarella Bella. The Wessels family makes the most of everything Austin has to offer—whether it's hiking, catching live music, trying out new restaurants, or just hanging out with family and friends.
