Make Your Own Cool Down Kit

Misbehavior is really a way of saying “I need help” when the words will not come. We wouldn’t answer “I need help” with “You’re in big trouble.” We’d say, “I can help. Here I am.

Imagine having a tool for your family that promotes self-soothing when feelings become overwhelming. Imagine having a tool that allows your child to express their feelings even when the moment feels too difficult to communicate through (kind) words. Imagine having a tool that can center or ground your child through the use of their 5 senses.

Come join us on Sunday, November 3rd for a relational experience with your child unlike any other. Partnered with Little Note, we invite you and your child to come make your own Cool Down Kit. A Cool Down Kit is a collection of sensory tools that can be used to both calm and stimulate a child’s sensory system during intense feelings. With a Cool Down Kit, children learn to self-regulate their physiological and emotional responses to stressors using outside sources.

Cool Down Kits are a whole-brain approach to generate resilient responses to stressors and situational demands.

Cool Down Kits can help your child:

  • Practice self-soothing behavior

  • Improve impulse control

  • Foster self-awareness

  • Sustain attention and concentration

  • Advance the safe experience and expression of feelings

  • Inspire the identification and differentiation of internal signals

  • Facilitate knowledge of strengths and inner resources

  • Promote the resolution of internal struggles

  • Stimulate awareness of problem-solving processes

  • Bolster awareness of movement

  • Regulate energy and arousal levels

  • Communicate implicit information to others

  • Reinforce alertness to information processed through somatic means

Think about a time before a meltdown when your child looked like they may be getting stressed. Now imagine you had a Cool Down Kit to help them pause and center themselves. We are offering children an opportunity to stay within their window of tolerance and feel empowered through connection to their minds + their bodies.

When a child can’t calm down they need connection & comfort, not criticism & control.

Dr. Bruce Perry’s research shows that we first need to help our children regulate their stress responses before addressing emotions or behavior. That’s why we start with sensory-based tools that target the most primitive parts of the brain. It’s important to remember that your child’s brain is still developing, and consistent practice is key—something that’s challenging even for us adults! We’ll provide you with an easy-to-follow handout on how to introduce and use your Cool Down Kit effectively.

Our Three-Step Approach:

  1. Regulate: Use sensory tools to help your child calm their fight/flight/freeze reactions.

  2. Relate: Connect with your child through empathy, showing them they are seen, heard, and understood.

  3. Reason (Spoiler alert - this is where we often try to start and often are met with an escalation!): Once your child is calm, guide them in reflecting on their experience, understanding their needs, and planning for future challenges.

This approach helps your child move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling empowered, teaching them valuable skills for emotional resilience.

Come create a Cool Down Kit with us and give your child the gift of calm and connection.

Your ticket gives you access to making 4 sensory tools together with your child, guided by our licensed therapists at Ensemble Therapy (who know a bit about the feelings our little ones experience).

  • Aromatherapy Stress Balls

  • Rainstick Sensory Bottle

  • Mindfulness Breathing Animal Craft

  • Sensory Jewelry

We will also have additional sensory items for purchase to stock up your kit with extra tools we use regularly in our therapeutic sessions. 100% of profits from ticket sales and donations help us remove financial barriers to families who are seeking therapeutic support in our community through our Whole Child. Whole City. fund.
