Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do About It

Appropriate Age Range:

Adults and caregivers.

What this book is all about:

Witten by an economist, this book explores three areas (education, labor market, and fatherhood) in which men are "falling behind" in our society. The author makes it clear that men, and white men in particular, are still the most privileged group in our society but also acknowledges some ways to support boys and men in an attempt to reduce the "male malaise."

Why you might want to read it:

If you're interested in what the data has to say about supporting boys in education differently. This book recommends "red shirting" or holding back all boys (especially summer birthdays) one year to allow their brain development to catch up to the educational system that benefits girls.

3 questions for you to ask yourself after reading it:

  1. Are there ways in which my boy is not being supported educationally? If my child is younger than pre-k 4 what might it be like to have him repeat pre-k 4?

  2. What messages does my son need from me to build his self esteem without him feeling like he has to compete for acknowledgment? Example, doing YOUR best vs. being THE best.

  3. How am I (or my husband) involved in my child's upbringing? Would I like to have a more involved role? What might that look like?
