Being You: A First Conversation about Gender by Megan Madison

Appropriate Age Range: 3-8 years

What this book is all about:

This board book is a great conversation starter on conversations around body parts, gender assignment, gender expression, stereotypes, and feminism. The back of the book has more information for caregivers to be able to understand and continue the conversation with their child.

Why you might want to read it:

This is a great starting place to talk to your child about gender and gender stereotypes because is allows for children to gain awareness about themselves and others.

3 questions for you to ask your children after reading it:

  1. How many pronouns do you know?

  2. How did you feel when hearing that people say things like "that's just for boys or that's just for girls?

  3. Have you noticed any gender stereotypes lately?
