Alphabreaths: The ABCs of Mindful Breathing by Christopher Willard

Appropriate Age Range: 4-8 years

What this book is all about:

Alphabreaths is an excellent resource for playful breathing and mindfulness techniques.

Why you might want to read it:

Breathing deeply may not come as naturally for littles, especially if they often find themselves in a state of escalation. Before prompting your child to breathe deeply, check in with them and validate their emotional experience. Once you've reflected and validated their feelings, you can use their big feeling as an opportunity to introduce some regulating techniques like deep breathing and mindfulness.

3 questions for you to ask your children after reading it:

  1. How does your body tell you when you’re feeling angry, happy, sad, etc?

  2. What is a new breathing technique you learned in this story that you’d be willing to practice?

  3. Which breathing techniques did you enjoy the most?
